To celebrate the start of Wimbledon, we spoke to Sainsbury's very own strawberry guru, Peter Czarnobaj, to talk about how to pick the perfect fruit.

1. Sainsbury’s sell a punnet of strawberries per second over the summer from a selection of 15 British-grown varieties; that's more than bread, milk and tea.

2. It is often thought darker coloured berries are older than brighter ones, however the colour is usually determined by the variety.

3. Shape is not important; but saying that, I find little ones often tend to be sweeter.

4. Strawberries don’t always taste like a strawberry – watch out for the subtle flavours of peach, apple and blackcurrant.

5. Strawberries tossed in a drizzle of balsamic vinegar are a perfect summer dessert. It might sound crazy but the sharpness of the balsamic vinegar with the sweet, ripe berries makes a really delicious combination.
