As we swap Mel and Sue for Sandi and Noel and get ready for a brand-new series of Great British Bake Off, we are once more looking forward to learning how to be better bakers, from the comfort of our sofas of course...


Here are our top 5 favourite things about everyone's favourite cooking show. 

1 The technical challenge

As befits a recipe site, we at Cooked love to see the bakers get to grips with the precise level of baking that is required for the technicals. From perfectly uniform macarons to correctly filled choux pastries this is the one task that each week, causes problems for every level of baker. 

2 Paul Hollywood

We will wait with baited breath to see how Paul copes without his TV wife Mary - however, we think Prue Leith, with her calm, no-nonsense approach will help him settle in to his new home at Channel 4 in no time - and as a former cookery school owner, she is sure to have the Bake Off ship-shape and with Paul eating out of the palm of her hand in no time. We hope Paul will remain just the way he's always been. 

3 Soggy bottoms

Just like everyone else, we watch the show for the failures as much as the successes. The kitchen dramas, tantrums and failed bakes make us love the contestants even more. Who will lose their cool this series? And who will rise above the rest to be crowned champion? 

4 Tips and tricks

The tips we pick up are also what makes us keep coming back for more! Even expert bakers can expect to learn a handy shortcut or quick tip that they'd never thought of. And with Prue and Paul keen to show off their baking knowledge to each other, this series might provide a few more than usual. 

5 Bread week 

Fingers crossed that this remains as it's one of our favourites. From a top-notch sourdough, to an intricate plaited loaf there is always a recipe we want to try. A great leveller: breadmaking can trip up those contestants who excel at cake decorating, or those who keep their cool with pastry. And that quiet novice baker you've not really noticed before can suddenly swoop in and steal Star Baker from under everyone else's noses - and open up the competition once more. 

Bake off's back - and we can't wait for it to get started. See you on the sofa!
