31 days hath (dry) January

If your enthusiasm for being alcohol-free in the long, cold month of January is waning, we have 5 easy ideas to help you keep on track until Feb 1.

1 Embrace the mocktail

Aussie food writer Kate Bradley gave up refined sugar, gluten and all processed foods as early as 2012, so her book Kenko Kitchen is full of inspiration for anyone looking to get healthier this year. And as you’d expect, her Hangover-free cocktails are so good they’ll guarantee that you stick to your dry Jan plan.

2 Keep warm

Really chocolatey hot chocolate or Masala chai tea latte, from food stylist and writer Fern Green not only taste great they’re like an encouraging hug in a mug. Taking time out to sit and enjoy a hot choc or an Indian-spiced milky tea will help to strengthen your resolve.

3 Spice it up

Homemade lemonade tastes like nothing you can buy – and the ginger in this fresh ginger lemonade gives it a bit of a kick without being too sweet. The authors of The Detox Kitchen Bible say it’s good for summer but we would happily drink this at any time of the year.

4 Take your inspiration from the kids

We promise you’ll get just as excited as the children do when faced with this retro winner. Rob Kirby’s Classic coke float is fun and serves as a pudding as well – result! For a more grown-up taste try the Virgin Mary, a delicious concoction of tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and celery salt.

5 Avoid beer with a takeaway

If you’re a fan of Indian food but are steering clear because you think a beer is all you can drink with a curry? Think again. Vivek Singh’s Cumin cooler is mint- and spice-infused water with a deliciously intense flavour. Or why not try Cyrus Todiwala’s Limbu pani? It’s a zesty limewater with a pinch of cumin that can be made with still or sparkling water. For a creamier drink try his Plain lassi
