Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, so the first Advent Sunday falls between 27 November and 3 December. In Scandinavia, this time is part of the festivities, leading up to the big event on Christmas Eve.

Celebrate one of the Advent Sundays outside. Play in the snow: remember there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes. Serve hot drinks, salmon sandwiches, and ‘nisse’ (elf) cake, make a stew and bake bread over the open fire; I’ll show you how in the first part of this chapter.

We get together with family and friends indoors as well, as you’ll see in the second part of this chapter, to prepare for all the parties in December, baking and making chocolates for Christmas. On the first Advent Sunday I also decorate my house and make a gingerbread town. Children visit, and make and decorate their own cookies. In the evening we eat apple æbleskiver ‘doughnuts’ and drink gløgg.
