Pasta is a key ingredient in the kitchen at university, partly because it’s ideal hangover food. An ultra delicious pasta dish can be put together in a very short space of time – just what you need after a long day. It’s cheap to buy and dried pasta can be kept in your student store cupboard for a long time. However, like so much in life, it can be the simplest things that can be hardest to get right. So here are a few tips and ideas that I find helpful whenever I’m cooking pasta.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 litre water, boiling
pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon olive oil
150g dried pasta, such as spaghetti, penne, or pasta shells

Method

  1. Bring the water to the boil and add the salt and the olive oil.
  2. Add the pasta and stir once to stop it sticking together.
  3. The pasta will usually take between 9 and 12 minutes to cook, depending on its size and shape. The packet will tell you how long to cook it, but test it before you drain it by giving it a taste. It will be ready when it’s soft, however I like mine when it still has a bit of bite to it.
  4. Drain the pasta in a colander and serve it with a sauce of your choice. How quick and easy!

Note

  • Pasta is cooked in a big pan of salted boiling water with the lid off. A drop of olive oil helps the pasta to stay loose and not stick together. Dried pasta is cooked for around 9–12 minutes; the packet will show the ideal time for the type you’ve bought. Fresh pasta cooks much faster, usually 2–4 minutes. Dried pasta is cheaper and keeps for longer though, so is usually better for student kitchens. One more thing to remember: hot pasta waits for no one, so eat it immediately.
