Lunch on Sunday is the perfect way to round off a weekend – a good time to cook for friends and family. For me, entertaining at home is a yearning for intimacy and comfort – and to share those pleasures with others. Usually Sunday lunch has the added advantage of time – to lay the table just as you would have it and to cook in a way that is less hurried. And, of course, the pace of the meal itself can be slower and altogether more enjoyable.

In the summer when the weather is warm enough, I’ll drag a table into the garden, fill a vase full of flowers and a jug full of home-made cordial. I find odd plates and glasses charming in this setting. Often I’ll scatter a few cushions here and there to suggest that life has slowed down – for a little while, at least.

During the coldest months of winter, I like to serve lunch slightly later in the day, just as the afternoon light is beginning to fade. It’s most definitely a time to relax in the warm and linger with your elbows on the table, reflecting that life is good after all.
