There is no better way to mark a celebration than with food. The taste, smell and sight of beautiful food in an agreeable setting create more happy memories than any other single thing I can think of. As a child, these occasions always felt like a thrilling treat to me. I remember great quantities of things made with love, care and attention – freshly churned ice cream, home-made bread and platters piled high with my favourite things. Food was chosen and prepared with consideration of everyone’s favourite things to eat.

Special occasions are about spending time with those you love, not cooking in the kitchen, so I like to prepare as much of the food as possible in advance. The following menus are composed with this in mind and for the most part the dishes can be created well ahead. Think about the setting, too. Laying an elegant table will only enhance your special meal.

The one really magical thing about these memorable occasions is that you can almost be certain that the table will be shared with those closest to you.
