These days, afternoon tea feels like an indulgence – a special opportunity to relax and enjoy luxurious food over gentle conversation with time to spare… so very rare these days. I especially love the idea of an occasion dedicated to all things sweet and delicate – my preferred time to eat sweet food is in the afternoon, rather than at the end of an evening meal. And of course it is lovely to have something savoury as well – nothing too strong in flavour – just enough to counterbalance the sweet things you will be eating.

More often than not, afternoon tea is a simple affair – a tempting home-made cake or scones, or a selection of these, with a pot of tea. But this is also a lovely time of the day to entertain, so I’ve provided a few menus to encourage you to do so. Of course, you can mix and match the suggestions as you like… and according to the seasons.
