Garlic green beans with parmesan and almonds

This is a recipe for those of you who enjoy fancy food or, as I like to call it, ‘posh nosh’. It’s a simple but tasty side dish that is a favourite on many restaurant menus!


Quantity Ingredient
200g green beans, trimmed
2 tablespoons flaked almonds
20g salted butter
2 small garlic cloves, finely grated or crushed
20g parmesan cheese


  1. With adult help: Boil your kettle and use it to fill a saucepan one-quarter of the way up. Place the steamer basket in the saucepan and fill with the beans, ensuring that the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the steamer. Steam the beans over medium heat until the beans are tender, but still green. Once cooked, remove from heat and set aside.
  2. With adult help: Meanwhile, heat a frying pan over low heat. Add the almonds and toast, stirring regularly with a wooden spoon, for around 3 minutes, or until golden brown and lightly toasted. Remove the almonds from the pan so they don’t keep cooking and set aside. In the same frying pan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, stirring well – make sure you don’t let it burn, as burnt garlic tastes yuck!
  3. With adult help: Place the cooked beans in a mixing bowl. Pour over the garlic butter mixture and, using a wooden spoon, stir to coat well. Add the toasted almonds and mix through gently.
  4. Using tongs, arrange the beans on a serving platter. Drizzle with the leftover garlic butter mixture. Shave the parmesan using a speed peeler, then sprinkle over the beans. Serve immediately.
