On a warm evening in Lisbon, every window is open, restaurant tables spill out onto the streets, and every street is alive with the sounds of cooking, eating and talking. Meat is just as important as fish in Lisbon and the scent of piri piri chicken cooking, or of sizzling meat marinated in vinegar and wine, takes me straight back to our balcony on Vila Berta in Graça. The historic building is protected, and the balcony, wrapped in curls of wrought iron, juts out over the gardens below and the cobbled street beneath. As the sun sets each night, families sit down for dinner up and down the road, and from our vantage point, we could see them eating together, our views only broken by sprays of deep-purple bougainvillea, which grew ever more fragrant the darker it got.
