Portugal’s wines should be better known than they are – especially the reds and whites from the Douro valley, and Jaén, a red from the Dao region. My favourite, though, is Vinho Verde, a white from Minho in northern Portugal made with Alvarinho (Albarino) grapes. It’s a wonderful wine for food – low in alcohol and always drunk when young and fresh, zippy and full of zesty citrus flavours. Port is the most famous Portuguese wine, of course, but few people know about white port, deliciously lengthened with tonic, and even less about Ginja, a ruby-red sour cherry liqueur, or about Lisbon’s cocktail scene, all of which are ripe for discovery. And when you’re drinking it’s important to have something to nibble on – whether charred little peppers, olives, home-made crisps or salty brined lupini beans.
