Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
3 slices bread, crusts removed
1/2 cup cream, evaporated milk or milk
1kg minced steak
2 teaspoons salt
freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1/4 cup grated onion
2 eggs
4-6 hamburger buns
shredded lettuce
2 tomatoes, sliced

Method

  1. Cut bread into squares and soak in the cream for 10 minutes, then beat with a fork. Mix with the meat, salt, pepper, mustard and onion in a large bowl. Mix in the eggs with a fork.
  2. Shape into 8 even-sized patties with wet hands. Preheat the griller and brush the rack with oil. Grill hamburgers for about 5–8 minutes on each side or until brown. Serve hamburgers inside buttered hamburger buns with shredded lettuce and tomatoes.

Hamburger variations:

  • Herbed: To the meat mixture, add a little chopped fresh marjoram and thyme, 1/2 cup diced celery and 1 tablespoon chopped parsley.

Onion: Sauté onion slices in butter until golden and heap on each hot hamburger.

Cheese burger: Top each hamburger, after turning and just finishing cooking, with 1–2 thin slices of cheese of your choice.
