The French word for a cake of all types – plain or decorated, large or small, used for dessert, with coffee or at celebrations and parties. In other parts of the world the word gâteau is synonymous with a rich, highly decorated cake, often layered with cream or butter cream, flavoured with liqueur, and decorated with cream, chocolate, nuts or fruits.
