In many families, dinner is often the first point of the day where everyone has a chance to come together and have a chat. While it can be bedlam getting a meal on the table and gathering your troops to sit down to eat it, the long-term outcomes suggest that it’s well worth the effort. It’s something my working mum and dad managed to do through my childhood and I’m sure it’s one of the reasons we’re still so close now.

One way to make the evening witching hour easier, is to prepare ahead and make enough for another meal. Many of the recipes in this chapter – soups, pies, casseroles – are perfect for just that. Another saviour is sharing with your children the same meal that you’re having, as all these recipes are designed to do. Ultimately, if they can develop a liking for your cooking and the food you like eating, it will save you years of having to cook two dinners every night. Bon appétit!
