Living in Melbourne, I’m spoiled for choice with restaurants that have taken tapas-style eating to new levels (and flavours). It’s not unusual to find something called ‘small dishes’ or ‘to start’ at the head of a menu.

I love this way of eating as it helps emphasise my own mantra of eating small portions. I find that you can have a few bites or tastes of a variety of dishes and feel satisfied. So why save it for when you just go out?

Here are some ideas if you’re having friends for dinner, or it’s the end of the week and you’ve got a little time up your sleeve to prepare a few dishes. And you know those wee little bowls and plates you see in homeware stores and think ‘ Who on earth would buy such small things, they look like they could be part of a child’s tea party set?’. Well, start buying them now. Yep, those small dishes are perfect ‘plates’ for your guests to eat from. And they also stop the urge to load up your plate like you’re at a cruise ship buffet.

The following recipes will do for a group of 6 people. Yes, they really will.
