I can hear scoffing from many a parent at the sheer ridiculousness and wastefulness of making sandwiches in the shape of bears/trains/stars etc. I know that children need to be able to eat food in a regular, adult, normal format. So this isn’t a ‘recipe’ to be repeated every day. I just think children should be allowed to enjoy and revel in their childlike ways every now and again. Before they start rolling their eyes and slamming doors and losing their sticky-out tummies.

These are the fillings and shapes that we sometimes indulge in after a particularly fraught morning. Cut-out sandwiches soothe many a highly-strung child and parent.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
butter, softened
sliced white bread

Filling of your choice, such as:

Quantity Ingredient
red leicester cheese, grated
hummus, mixed with grated carrot
marmite
ham
sausage, cooked and cold
egg mayonnaise

Method

  1. If necessary, use a very short blitz in the microwave to soften the butter, as manufactured white bread won’t withstand any overzealous buttering with hard fat. Cut out as many shapes, in pairs, from the bread as you can muster with cookie cutters or special sandwich cutters. I hate waste, so pop the remnants into a plastic bag, freeze and use for feeding the ducks.
  2. Match pairs of the shape and butter the inside of the slices. I’d suggest you do this job and leave the cutting of the shapes to the helper(s), working in production-line fashion. Take each pair and add your chosen sandwich filling. These sandwiches will need a little squeeze to keep them together as they don’t have crusts to do this job.
  3. Eat in front of the TV for a special lunch. If it’s a really special lunch then jam and/or chocolate spread might be permissible as a filling. If it really is one of those days eat with crisps that look like bacon rashers.
