When I finished writing The Frugal Cook, roughly three years ago, I guess I imagined we'd all be out of the woods economically by now, so it's not entirely good news there's still such a need for the book. Jobs have disappeared, the cost of living's gone up, times for many are still tough - the art of simple home cooking i more valuable than ever before.

The danger is that we reduce the quality of the ingredients we buy at the expense of our own health and the survival of our farmers and other food producers. But I firmly believe it is possible to eat healthily - and to eat the kind of food you enjoy - on a tight budget. And to enjoy it. There's something quite David-and-Goliath-like about beating the supermarkets at their own game - working out what the real bargains are rather than just falling for the special offers. And finding that independent shops can often match them for price.

This new edition has had a bit of a makeover, with a shiny new cover and some glossy food photography. I hope they persuade you just how appetising frugal food can look; persuade you that you really can feed your friends on cheap cuts, market bargains and leftovers and they'll never know the difference... so long as you don't let on...;-)
