Living in a country with distinct seasons, we have access to mostly imported fruit and vegetables during the winter months. Therefore, we always make sure to stock up on loads of frozen local berries so we can at least make delicious smoothies all year round. Berries are low in sugar, contain high amounts of antioxidants (which protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals) and are one of our favourite ingredients, not only in smoothies. In this smoothie, we simply use a bag of mixed berries (usually a mix of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackcurrants) along with an avocado for creaminess, ginger for some bite, orange as a sweetener and fennel for healthy cleansing properties. It doesn’t, however, taste healthy at all, just very fresh! You can always add a banana if you prefer it sweeter.
