You know those sliced onions that are served in a red sauce with papadams before the meal at Indian restaurants? Well, this simple chutney is a lot more popular than you might think, and is one of the most requested recipes on my blog. It’s so easy to make.

If you’re planning a curry night anytime soon, you won’t want to leave this onion chutney off the menu.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 large onion, finely sliced
3 tablespoons tomato ketchup
1 tablespoon Tomato purée
1 teaspoon chilli powder, or to taste
pinch salt
1 teaspoon roasted cumin seeds

Method

  1. Put the sliced onions in a bowl of cold water with ice cubes added, and put in the fridge for about an hour. Once good and cold, drain and pat the slices dry with a clean cloth.
  2. Now mix the ketchup, tomato purée, chilli powder and salt together. Stir in the sliced onions and roasted cumin seeds.
  3. Stick in the fridge for about 45 minutes before serving, to allow the ingredients to get to know each other, and serve with papadams or whatever you fancy.
