Tea is one of Sri Lanka’s main export crops and drinking it is a national pastime. Tea is served at all times of the day, either black, with milk or milk powder when fresh milk is not available and with sugar, jaggery or spices such as ginger. Tea is always served to visitors when they arrive at a Sri Lankan home and can be bought from roadside stalls in most streets throughout the country.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
4 cups water
5 slices ginger
4 teaspoons black tea leaves
1/2 cup milk

Method

  1. Place water and ginger in a pot and bring to boil. Add tea and stand to rest for 2–3 minutes. Add milk, stir through and serve with sugar if needed.
